Butterflies

Vocabulary of a Butterfly Life cycle

TermDefinition
Caterpillar Larvae stage of a butterfly.
Chrysalis The hard shell covering the pupa. It looks like an upside down tear drop.
Molt When caterpillars shed their skin as they grow.
Thorax The section of the body between the head and the abdomen. The legs are wings are attached.
Abdomen The hind part of the body.
Proboscis The butterflies tongue that looks like a drinking straw.
Metamorphosis The process of changing from one thing into another. The body changes.
