Environmental Science: Chapter 13 Vocab

TermDefinition
Groundwater The water in the spaces in the ground
Zone of Saturation The places in the zone that are completely filled with water
Water Table The top of the groundwater zone
Aquifers Underground caverns and porous layers of sand, gravel, or bedrock through which groundwater flows
Surface Water The freshwater from precipitation and snowmelt that flows across the earth's land surface and into rivers, streams, lakes, wetlands, estuaries, and oceans
Surface Runoff Precipitation that does not infiltrate the ground or return to the atmosphere by evaporation
Watershed The land form which surface water drains into a particular river, lake, wetlands, or other body of water
Reliable Surface Runoff The amount of surface runoff that we can generally count on as a source of freshwater from year to year
Drought A prolonged period in which precipitation is at least 70% lower and evaporation is higher than normal in an area that is normally not dry
Dam A structure built across a river to control the river's water flow
Reservoir The artificial lake resulting from the damming of a river
Floodplain The area next to a stream that fills with water when the stream floods
