1. What year is it? (ch 7) 1933
2. Why were people picketing Jewish businesses? April 1, 1933, Adolph Hitler proclaimed a one-day boycott of all Jewish shops.
3. What is a boycott? A refusal to have any business dealings with a particular group or people
4. Why did the adults try to prevent the boys from being involved? Page 28, Dr Askenase did not want them to see an ugly scene. Page 31, Freidrich’s father came after them because such crowds could be dangerous.

2. Why were the Nazis spreading propaganda about the Jews? The Nazis spread propaganda about the Jews so they could confiscate or take their property, to force them to leave the country and finally as a reason for killing them.
3. What is propaganda? False information about someone or a group
4. Why did Friedrich want to join the Jungvolk? Do you think Friedrich understood what the Jungvolk was all about? Page 32, he liked to see the group marching through town with their flag and singing. I don’t think he realized exactly what they were all about.
5. What was the special message of the hunchback delegate from the District Office? Pages 36-37, he talked about the danger the Jews represented and their cruelty in butchering animals and all the Jewish crimes of wars and murdering of Christian children.
6. What is kosher butchering? Was the hunchback telling the truth? How do you know? Kosher butchers use a special knife to kill the animals. They are butchered in a certain way.
7. What did the slogan, “The Jews are our affliction!” mean (page 37)? Did the young boys really understand the slogan that they were shouting? Why do you think Friedrich was called to stand up?
8. Why did the hunchback take Friedrich’s ring? Because Friedrich was Jewish.

2. Friedrich’s friend was a real friend when he admitted he broke the window and tried to take the blame for what he had done. How can you explain what the policeman tried to tell him? you know he’s a Jew. Believe me we grownups have had plenty of experiences with Jews. You can’t trust them they’re sneaky and they cheat…. The policeman was trying to tell him that Friedrich can’t be trusted or believed because he is Jewish.
3. Was Friedrich trying to steal the yarn? No, he was trying to bring it inside.
4. Why didn’t the shopkeeper accept the truth that Friedrich’s friend offered? Page 39, the shopkeeper accused the Jews of ruining her business with department stores. She said he broke the window so he could steal her merchandise. But, in truth, business was bad because of the Great Depression.
5. Did Friedrich’s father believe him? What did he say to the shopkeeper? What did he say to the police officer? Yes, he told the shopkeeper if she could swear on an oath that what she said it true she should press charges. He told the policeman he would pay for the damages.
