Musical Descriptors

Breaking down all the descriptive words we use for music.

QuestionAnswer
Noise Unorganized sounds. Ex: TV static, Cars in traffic
Music Sounds organized through use of pitch and rhythm.
Tempo The speed in which music is performed.
Dynamics The volume at which music is performed.
Timbre The mood/color of tone in performed music.
Instrumentation The combination of instruments used in performed music.
Ensemble The name for a group of musicians, determined by their instruments. Ex: Orchestra, Jazz Band, Choir
Harmony The combination of notes, usually forming chords.
Articulation The manner in which sounds are produced. Ex: Short and detached, smooth and connected.
Genre The stylistic category music belongs to.
Musical Texture The manner in which layers of music interact. Ex: monophonic, homophonic, polyphonic
