Work Measure of energy transfer that occurs when an object is moved over a distance by an external force at least part of which is applied in the direction of the displacement. Wheel And Axle A type of simple machine used to make tasks easier in terms of manipulating force by applying the concept of mechanical advantage.
Power Time rate of doing work or delivering energy, expressible as the amount of work done W, or energy transferred, divided by the time interval t—or W/t. Inclined Plane Simple machine consisting of a sloping surface, used for raising heavy bodies.
Mechanical Advantage The ratio of the force produced by a machine to the force applied to it, used in assessing the performance of a machine. Wedge A simple machine that consists of two inclined planes, giving it a thin end and thick end
Efficiency A comparison of the energy output to the energy input in a given system. Screw A simple machine consisting of a twisted inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder in ridges.
Simple Machine Any of several devices with few or no moving parts that are used to modify motion and the magnitude of a force in order to perform work. Pulley A wheel that carries a flexible rope, cord, cable, chain, or belt on its rim.
Lever A lever is a simple machine consisting of a beam or rigid rod pivoted at a fixed hinge, or fulcrum.
Fulcrum The support, or point of rest, on which a lever turns in moving a body.
