Water cycle vocab

TermDefinition
Water Cycle the movement of water as it changes state around the earth
Evaporation a change in state from a liquid to a gas (e.g. liquid water changing to water vapour)
Condensation a change in state from a gas to a liquid (e.g. water vapour changing into liquid water)
Precipitation water that has gathered in the clouds and falls to Earth as rain, hail, snow, or sleet
Collection the gathering of precipitation and runoff in surface water receivers (e.g. lakes)
Sublimation a change of tate from a solid into a gas (e.g. snow or ice changing into water vapour without passing through the liquid phase)
Groundwater water that sinks into the ground – usually only seen to be water that has percolated down into the saturated zone
Aquatard an impervious layer of clay, silt, or rock through which water cannot move quickly
Aquaifer an underground zone of rock or soil that contains and yields water
Saturated zone the area beneath the water table where water fills the spaces in the gravel, sand, silt, or rock
Water table the upper boundary of the saturated zone – it rises as a result of rainfall and falls as a result of evaporation and human use
Percolation the process of seeping through porous material
Capillary action the upward movement of water through soil due to the attraction of water molecules to soil particles
