Genre A major category or type of literature
Gist The main point
Inference A logical interpretation based on prior knowledge and experience
Main Idea What the message is mostly about
Predict To give an expected result
Visualize To form a mental image of something; imagine
Narrative The telling of a story or an account of an event or series of events
Expository Intended to explain or describe something
Mood Feeling or atmosphere that a writer creates for the reader
Theme The moral or lesson of the story
Metaphor A comparison of two unlike things without using like or as
Personification A figure of speech in which an object or animal is given human feelings, thoughts or attitudes
Simile The comparasion of two unlike things using like or as
Claim The writer's position on an issue or problem
Evidence Proof that something is true
Stanza A fixed number of lines of verse forming a unit of a poem
Onomatopoeia A word that imitates the sound it represents
Hook Grabs the readers attention
Trait A distinguishing quality or characteristic
Clincher Closing ideas designed to keep the reader thinking
Point of view The perspective from which a story is told
First person point of view Told from the viewpoint of one of the characters using the pronouns "I" and "we"
