What is the setting? The apartment/house in Germany
Who are the main characters? Name them and write a short description of each. Polycarp – a garden statue, Herr Resch – landlord, very self-Important. came out On holidays. Boy’s parents: Father – out of work Friedrich Schneider – born 1 wk after the boy, Herr Schneider – an official with the post office, Frau Schneider – pleasant
What year is it? (Ch 2) 1929
Why is Friedrich at the Boy's house? His mother was at city hall and didn’t want to bring him
How did the Boy feel about Friedrich being at his house? He was upset and didn’t want to share
How did Friedrich change this? He showed his cuckoo whistle and his friend wanted to play with it.
What did they do with the boy's mother? They made potato pancakes.
How did they feel about each other at the end of the chapter? They were friends and took a bath together.
What year is it? (Ch 3) 1929
What did Friedrich and his mother do in the snow? How were they feeling? Give an example from the story. Friedrich and his mom: 1. danced 2. slid 3. snowball fight 4. made a snowman They were having a lot of fun together “They were gay and exhuberant.” They were laughing
What did Mother say comes first? She said work was more important
What did the Boy and Mother do in the snow? Nothing
How do you think the Boy felt when watching Friedrich and his mother play in the snow? Why? He was probably jealous. He wished he could do that with his mother.
What did Herr Resch call Friedrich? a dirty Jewboy
How did Friedrich's mother react? How did the Boy's mother react? Friedrich’s mother was in the house and didn’t see. The Boy’s mother moved away from the window and didn’t want to be involved.

1. What year is it? (ch 4) 1930
2. Describe Grandfather. He is gruff, mean, and very big on manners. Judgmental He questioned Father and was mean because he helped support them.
3. How does Grandfather feel towards Jewish people? How does he let his family know his feelings? Grandfather does not like Jewish people. He tells a story about his boss and how he smiled even when he was correcting him. He said he didn’t even take his hat off in public.
4. What is the word for how the grandfather feels toward Jewish people. Write the definition. Prejudice - unreasonable feelings, opinions, or attitudes, esp. of a hostile nature, regarding a racial, religious, or national group.
5. What did the Grandfather say about the Boy and Friedrich’s friendship? He forbids his grandson to associate with Friedrich.
6. What did Father say that made Mother’s face color? Why do you think it made her face color? Why did Father choose this action? Father said the Schneider’s don’t believe in Jesus. He said this to agree w/ Grandfather. her face colored because she knew that he didn’t believe that way. Father chose this to go along and keep the peace. He didn’t want Grandfather to get angry.
7. Why did Mother lie to Grandfather? Because he said his grandson couldn’t associate with Friedrich. She didn’t want Grandfather to know the Jewish boy knocked on the door.
1. What year is it? (ch 5) 1930
2. What things did Friedrich and his family do to keep the Sabbath? They put a whit cloth on the table, candles and homemade loaves of bread at the father’s place at the table, a prayer book and goblet filled with wine and they say prayers at the table.
3. How was Friedrich’s friend made a part of the family prayers? Friedrich’s friend quietly watched and prayed with them. He took a sip of wine.
1. What year is it? (ch 6) 1931
2. How did German children celebrate the first day of school? They received a cone-shaped paper bag filled with candy.
3. How did the boys’ bags differ? Friedrich’s was red and his friend’s was blue.
4. Why did Friedrich’s friend and his family hesitate about going to the amusement park? They didn’t have enough money because the father had no work.
5. What was the Boy’s father worried about? How do you know? (Give an example from the story.) His Father was worried about having enough money to buy everyone something. He had a desperate face when he counted his money.
6. What souvenir did they get? Describe it. had their picture taken on a horse. Each family got a postcard w/pic on it. They were all on an expandable horse. The horse had the friend’s bag btwn ears. Mom had a look like she had a frog in her mouth. dad looked important & Herr Schneider laughs
7. How did Father feel about the postcard? At first he was very proud then he felt ashamed that he took himself so seriously.
8. Why didn’t they have lunch? They used the money at the park.
