| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What are the five steps in the water cycle? | Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation, Accumulation, Runoff |
| What is evaporation? | Evaporation is when a liquid changes into a gas because the sun heats it up. Liquid water evaporates to become a gas called water vapor. The sun's heat helps water evaporate and return to the atmosphere. |
| What is condensation? | Condensation is the conversion of water from a gas state to a liquid state. Condensation is the process that causes clouds to develop. |
| What is precipitation? | Precipitation is the release of water from the sky, it can be liquid or solid, for example, rain, sleet, hail and snow. |
| What is accumulation? | Accumulation is the process of water collecting in rivers, lakes, streams, oceans and other bodies of water. |
| What is runoff? | Runoff is the process where water runs over the surface of earth. When the snow melts into water it also leads to runoff. Water can go to lakes, river, streams, underground, etc. |
| What is a rotation? | The Earth completes a rotation in one day, or 24 hours. It causes day/night. |
| What is a revolution? | The Earth completes one revolution around the sun. It takes one year, or 365 days. It causes seasons. |
| What is climate? | Climate tells us about what the weather is like over a long period of time in a certain place. |
| How does temperature affect the water cycle? | Temperature affects the water cycle because it changes the states of matter of water (from solid, to liquid, to gas) |
| What is weathering? | Weathering is the breaking down of the Earth (rock, soil and dirt) caused by water, wind, and gravity. |
| What is erosion? | Erosion is the movement of Earth (rock, soil, dirt), caused by water, wind, and ice. |
| What is deposition? | Deposition is when Earth's surface is laid down or deposited in a new place |
| What do plate boundaries do? | You look at plate boundaries to see patterns with volcanoes and earthquakes. |
| What are renewable energy resources? | Renewable energy is taken from natural processes that can be used again and again and never run out. Examples: water, wind, light (solar), ocean |
| What are NONrenewable energy resources? | A nonrenewable energy comes from sources that will run out or not be replenished. Examples: coal, natural gas, oil |
| What are consumers? | An organism that obtains energy and nutrients by feeding/eating on other organisms or their remains |
| What are producers? | An organism that can make its own food. Examples: plants |
| What are decomposers? | Bacteria and fungi that break down dead plants and animals |
| What do plants need to make food? | Plants make food/sugar by using water, sunlight, and carbon dioxide. |
| What are the life cycle stages? | Birth, growth, reproduction, death |
| What is a composter? | Composting helps turn old plants, vegetables, fruits, and waste into soil filled with nutrients. A composter needs air, decomposers, and green and brown waste items to work. Decomposers break down the waste in order to make rich soil. |
| What is the source of energy in a food web? | The sun |
| What are the three states of matter? | Solid, liquid, gas |
| What causes a phase change? | When heat is added or taken away |
| Freezing makes a ___________. | Solid |
| Melting makes a ____________. | Liquid |
| Evaporation makes a _______________. | Gas |
| What are the types of energy? | Sound, Light, Heat, Electrical |
| The direction of gravity is which direction? | Towards the Center of the Earth |
| Kinetic Energy ____________ as speed _____________. | Kinetic energy increases as speed increase. |
| With magnets, opposites ____________. | Opposite poles attract each other (North and South) |
| With magnets, like poles _________. | Like poles repel each other. (North and North and South and South repel each other) |
| What is a mixture? | A mixture is the combination of two substances that CAN be separated easily. Example: trail mix, salad |
| What is a solution? | A solution is when two things dissolve and you CANNOT undo it. Example: Kool Aid, Lemonade |
| What is a prototype? | A prototype is the first design or model of something |
| What is a failure point? | A flaw or a mistake in a design. |
| In a design, what is a variable? | Anything that can change or be changed in an experiment. |
