Metal and non metals
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Malleable | Can be hammered or pressed into different shapes |
| Ductile | Can be stretched into a wire |
| Sonorous | Able to make a ringing sound |
| High Density | Heavy for its size |
| High melting points | Example: iron has a melting point of 1538 degrees Celsius |
| What is an alkali metal? | Alkali metals are soft and have low densities |
| Do alkali metals have an exception to the properties of normal metals? | Yes |
| What are the properties of metals? | Hard and strong, Lustrous(Shiny), High melting points, high density, Sonorous, conduct electricity, conduct heat, ductile, malleable. |
| What is an alloy? | An alloy is a mixture of metals. Example: Bronze |
| What is bronze a mixture of? | Copper and tin |
| What are the uses of bronze? | Statues and medals |
| What are the properties of non metals? | Poor heat conductors, usually gases or solids at room temperature, brittle, poor electrical conductors, low melting points. |
| Insulator | Cannot easily conduct heat or electricity. Eg. Rubber, paper, plastic, glass. |
| What is an exception for insulators? | Carbon |
| What is corrosion? | The deterioration of a material, usually metal or non metal, due to a chemical reaction. |
| Rusting | The corrosion of iron when iron reacts to water and oxygen. |
