Organelle Review

Study the major organelles in the plant and animal cells

QuestionAnswer
Cell membrane Regulates what enters and exits the cell
Nucleus Considered to be “the brain of the cell”; Contains our DNA/Chromosomes
Nucleolus Found inside of the nucleus; produces ribosomes
Ribosomes Makes proteins (Think of Ribosomes- Ribs - Meat - Protein)
Vacuole/Vesicle It stores food water and wastes; Plant cells have a larger vacuole than animal cells to store more materials.
Mitochondria Produces energy for the cell to use (powerhouse of the cell); Site of respiration
Cytoplasm IT IS NOT AN ORGANELLE!!! It is a gel-like substance that helps holds all the organelles in place. (Think of fruits held by jello)
Rough and Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum Helps transport materials in the cell. The rough ER has ribosomes attached to it; The smooth ER doesn’t have ribosomes attached to it
Centrioles Found only in animal cells; Aids in cell division by stretching out the cell so it can split during Mitosis
Golgi apparatus Inspects and packages proteins
Lysosomes Contains enzymes that help carry out cellular functions; Also helps clean the cell.
Cell Wall Found only in plants. A rigid structure that supports and protects the cells of the plant; Made of cellulose
Chloroplast Found only in plant cells; It is the site of photosynthesis; Contains chlorophyll which absorbs light and gives plants their green pigment
Nuclear Membrane Regulates what enters and exits the nucleus

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
