Separating mixtures andSolutions

QuestionAnswer
What is a solvent? A substance that dissolves other materials to form a solution. E.g. Water
What is a solute? A substance that dissolves into the solvent e.g. sugar.
What is a solution? A perfect mixture of a solute and a solvent.
What is a mixture? Two or more substances together that are not chemically combined.
What is a suspension? A mixture in which small solid or liquid particles are suspended in a liquid or gas.
What is a dilute solution? When there is a small amount of solute and a large amount of solvent.
What is a concentrated solution? When there is a large amount of solute and a small amount of solvent.
What is a saturated solution? When a solution can no longer dissolve anymore solute.
What does solubility mean? How much solute will dissolve in 100g of solvent.
Crystallisation? the formation of crystals when a hot saturated solution cools.
Filtration? A method of separating an insoluble solid from a liquid using a material that only allows liquid to pass through it.
Filtrate? A liquid that has been filtered through the filter paper
What is the name of a solid left behind in the filter paper? Residue
It is Evaporating a liquid followed by condensing the vapour is called …. Distillation
When you change vapor back into a liquid it is called... Condensation
When the water is purified by condensation from the vapour during distillation it is called... Distillate e.g. sea water the water evaporates and your left with salt and water separate.
Chromatogram? a strip of paper on which parts of a mixture have been separated by chromatography.
