| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is a solvent? | A substance that dissolves other materials to form a solution. E.g. Water |
| What is a solute? | A substance that dissolves into the solvent e.g. sugar. |
| What is a solution? | A perfect mixture of a solute and a solvent. |
| What is a mixture? | Two or more substances together that are not chemically combined. |
| What is a suspension? | A mixture in which small solid or liquid particles are suspended in a liquid or gas. |
| What is a dilute solution? | When there is a small amount of solute and a large amount of solvent. |
| What is a concentrated solution? | When there is a large amount of solute and a small amount of solvent. |
| What is a saturated solution? | When a solution can no longer dissolve anymore solute. |
| What does solubility mean? | How much solute will dissolve in 100g of solvent. |
| Crystallisation? | the formation of crystals when a hot saturated solution cools. |
| Filtration? | A method of separating an insoluble solid from a liquid using a material that only allows liquid to pass through it. |
| Filtrate? | A liquid that has been filtered through the filter paper |
| What is the name of a solid left behind in the filter paper? | Residue |
| It is Evaporating a liquid followed by condensing the vapour is called …. | Distillation |
| When you change vapor back into a liquid it is called... | Condensation |
| When the water is purified by condensation from the vapour during distillation it is called... | Distillate e.g. sea water the water evaporates and your left with salt and water separate. |
| Chromatogram? | a strip of paper on which parts of a mixture have been separated by chromatography. |
