Immune Seminar

Bio 3 Seminar

QuestionAnswer
What are the organs of the immune system? Bone marrow, thymus, lymph nodes, spleen and MALT
What does the bone marrow do? Maturation of B cells
What does the thymus do? Differentiation of T cells
What does the lymph nodes do? Prevalent aound armpits, groin and knees
What does the spleen do? Filters blood and removes dead/malfunctioning cells
What does the MALT do? Protects against micro-organisms by a mucus. Examples are the Peyer’s Patch in the small intestines, the respiratory, digestive and genitourinary tracts.
What are the 3 lines of defence? 1) Innate nonspecific physical barrier 2) Innate nonspecific cells 3) Adaptive specific defenses
What is included is innate nonspecific physical barrier? Mucus and skin
What is included is innate nonspecific cells? Phagocytes (Macrophages, neutrophils and natural killer cells), inflammation and fever
What is included is adaptive specific defenses Lymphocytes, antibodies and memory cells
Name 2 type of cells and what they do 1) B cells: Produces plasma cells that secretes antibodies 2) T cells: Regulates other cells
How does B cells work? Can recognize part of an epitope (portion of an antigen) that may or may not be a protein. Can be activated by co-receptors.
How do T cells work? Contain a specific receptor called TCR that recognizes small chains of peptides in certain protein molecule
What are the 3 diseases associated with the immune system? Diabetes type 1 (Not enough insulin produced), HIV-AIDS (HIV is virus and leads to AIDS) and theumatoid arthritis (Joint pain, inflammation)
What are the causes of type 1 diabetes? The immune system attacks and destroys insulin-producing cells (beta cells) in the pancreas.
What causes HIV-AIDS? HIV destroys white blood cells.
What causes rheumatoid arthritis? Overeactive immune system attacking its own joint tissues instead of intruders lol
What are the symptoms of type 1 diabetes? Increased thirst, intense hunger, fatigue, weakness, blurred vision.
What are the symptoms of HIV-AIDS? Flu-like symptoms: fever, weakness, muscle pain, swollen glands, rashes...
What are the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis? Tender/swollen joints, pain and stiffness in joints, fatigue, loss of appetite. Can expand to the skin, eye, heart... dla marde
