What are the external structure of the female reproductive system? Brief function of each. Vulva (protection), labia majora (protection), labia minora (protection), Bartholin's glands (mucus excretion), clitoris (stimulation) and mons pubis (glands releasing pheromones)
What are the internal structure of the female reproductive system? Brief function of each. Vagina (intercourse, mentrual bleeding, baby), uterus (baby development), ovaries (produce eggs and hormones), fallopian tubes (tunnel for egg cells) and endometrium (implantation, menstruation)
What is the difference between the ovarian and uterine cycle? Goal of ovarian cycle is to prepare endocrine tissues for pregnancy and release the eggs while goal of uterine is to prepare the endometrium to receive the fertilized egg.
What are the phases of the ovarian cycle? 1) Follicular phase (day 1-13) 2) Ovulation (day 14) 3) Luteal phase (day 15-28)
What are the phases of the uterine cycle? 1) Menstruation (day 1-3) 2) Proliferation (day 3-13) 3) Ovulation (day 14) 4) Secretory or luteal (day 15-28)
What are the hormones associated with the uterine cycle? LH, FSH, estrogen and progesterone
What are the 3 diseases of the female reproductive system? Pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome.
What is pelvic inflammatory disease? Infection that occurs when a bacteria spreads from the vagina to the uterus, fallopian tubes or ovaries
What is endometriosis? Growth of endometrial-like tissue outside of the uterus which acts as endometrium (thickens, breaks down, and bleeds) but cannot exit the body
What is polycystic ovary syndrome? Hormone imbalance causing small cysts in ovaries
What are the causes of pelvic inflammatory disease? Untreated STDs and insertion of an IUD
What are the causes of endometriosis? unknown
What are the causes of polycystic ovary syndrome? unknown, XS insulin and adrogens
What are the symptoms of pelvic inflammatory disease? Abdominal pain, fever, unusual discharge/bleeding, painful urination
What are the symptoms of endometriosis? Painful period, pain in intercourse and XS bleeding
What are the symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome? Irregular period, XS facial hair, hair loss, acne and weight gain
