Skeletal Seminar
Bio 3 Seminar
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What are the functions of the skeletal system? | Support and movement, protection, mineral homeostasis, blood-cell formation and triglyceride storage |
| What are the 5 types of skeletons? Name phyla examples for each | The hydrostatic skeleton (earthworm, jellyfish), the exoskeleton (crustaceans, insects), the endoskeleton (humans, sea urchins), the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton (last 2 are humans). |
| What's the difference between hydrostatic skeleton and exoskeleton? | Hydrostatic is soft while exoskeleton is rigid (hard) |
| What's the difference between exoskeleton and endoskeleton? | While both are rigid, the exoskeleton is external and the enoskeleton is internal. |
| Identify the major bones in a human skeleton | Skull, sternum, costal cartilage, ribs, vertebrae, clavicles, scapula, humerus, pelvis, tarsals, metatarsals, radius, ulna, carpals, metacarpals, phalanges, femur, patella, tibia and fibula :) |
| What are the types of joints and what are they? | 1) Ball and socket joints (all direction movement in hip) 2) hinge joint (movement in one plane) 3) Gliding joints (sliding of one bone onto the other) 4) Combination joint (atleast 2 different types of joints combined) |
| Give an example of a ball and socket joint | Human body hip joint |
| Give an example of hinge joint | Elbow rotating backward and foward only |
| Give an example of gliding joint | Vertebrae joint |
| Give an example of combination joint | The jaw that can move side to side or foward and backward |
| What are 3 diseases associated with the skeletal muscle? | Osteoporosis (porous bones), rickets (softening of bones) and fibrous dysplasia (abnomalities of body structure development) |
| What the causes of osteoporosis? | Change in hormone levels, diet low in calcium and vitamin D, other diseases like anorexia, mediactions and drug/alcohol abuse |
| What are the causes of rickets? | Vitamin D deficiency and calcium phosphate not properly deposited in the bones |
| What are the causes of fibrous dysplacia? | Unknown! Theory of a genetic mutation (overproduction of fibrous tissue) |
| What are the symptoms of osteoporosis? | Loss of bone density and thinning of the bones, curving of the spine, stooped position, back ache and fracture stressors |
| What are the symptoms of rickets? | Bones become soft, curved and stunted. Profuse sweating, delays in development of body |
| What are the symptoms of fibrous dysplasia | Solid calcified bone replaced with fibrous tissue. Enlargement of the bones on one side of the face and café au lait spots. |
