| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What are the 4 chambers in the heart? | The right and left atria, the right and left ventricles |
| What is the function of the heart? | To bring oxygen and nutrients to the body cells by pumping blood |
| What is the difference between pulmonary and systemic circulation? | Pulmonary moves blood between the heart and the lungs while systemic moves blood between the heart and the whole body. |
| Explain pulmonary circulation | Deoxygenated blood goes out of the heart (from right ventricle) into the lungs. Lungs absorbs oxygen and sends the blood back to the heart as oxygenated blood. |
| Explain systemic circulation | Oxygenated blood goes out of the heart and towards the body's cellsé It comes back into the heart as oxygenated blood. |
| Be able to explain and ut arrows on the blood circulation diagram | remember that red=oxygenated and that blue=deoxygenated |
| What is the function of blood? | Transportation, regulation and protection |
| What is the function of cappillaries? | Capillaries are where oxygen and nutrients are exchanged for carbon dioxide and waste. |
| Explain gas exchange | Out of left ventricle, oxygenated bood i distributed throughout the body with capillaries. It supplies O2 and nutrients to cells. RBC starts to be deoxygenated. CO2 and waste are transferred through capillary blood for excretion. Deoxygenated to right ve |
| What are the 3 diseases associated to the circulatory system? | Coronary artery disease, heart valve disease ad cardiomyopathy. |
| What is coronary artery disease? | It's the build up of paque in the coronary artery |
| What is heart valve disease? | Valves don't function porperly |
| What is cardiomyopathy? | Muscle unable to pump blood to he body porperly |
| What are the causes of coronary artery disease? | Smoking, high bpm, high cholesterol and beinf sedentary |
| What are the causes of heart valve disease? | Congenital (happens at birth) or due to an infection |
| What are the causes of cardiomyopathy? | High bpm, heart tissue damage, infections and iron buildup |
| What are the symptoms of coronary artery disease? | Chest pain and shortness of breath |
| What are the symptoms of heart valve disease? | Wooshing sound, chest pain and fatigue |
| What are the symptoms of cardiomyopathy? | Fatigue, shortness of breath and heart palpitations |
| What are the characteristics of an open circulatory system? | No blood vessels and no capillaries. No gas exchange, only NUTRIENT exchange. Slow metabolic activity so slow blood flow. |
| What are the characteristics of a closed circulatory system? | Blood vessels and capillaries present. Gas and nutrient exchange. Fast metabolic activity so rapid blood flow. |
| In an open system, where is the blood pumped? | Into a cavity |
| In a closed system, where is the blood pumped? | By heart through blood vessels |
