QuestionAnswer
statistical analysis Using computations to organize, describe, and make meaning from a set of data, often for the purpose of making a decision.
center (statistics) Where the midpoint of the data lies.
spread (statistics) How the data is distributed.
mean (average) The sum of the terms in a dataset divided by the number of terms in the dataset.
Median The middle number in a dataset when the numbers are arranged in value order.
sample (statistics) A portion of a larger population.
population (statistics) The entire group from which all possible items could be selected and measured.
box and whiskers plot A graphic way to display the median, quartiles, and extremes of a data set on a number line to show the distribution of data.
Minimum The smallest value in the dataset.
Maximum The largest value in the dataset.
spread of a set of data tells how the data is distributed. It gives the range of values in the dataset, and tells us how varied the values are when compared with the median value.
Range The difference between the highest and lowest values in the dataset:
middle fifty percent Where the middle 50% of the data in the dataset is located.
Spreadsheet A document which has data arranged in row and column grids to be used for calculations of data.
Function A predefined formula that is in a spreadsheet program.
five number summary (statistics) The five numbers, calculated from a data set, that are used to summarize the center and spread of the data, as well as construct a box and whiskers plot.
