QuestionAnswer
Alkali Metals Group 1 elements; most reactive METALS on the PT; Metals that only have 1 valence electron
Alkaline Earth Metals Group 2 elements; MOST REACTIVE METALS on the PT; They that only have 2 valence electrons
Halogens Group 17 elements; MOST REACTIVE NONMETALS on the PT; They that have 7 valence electrons
Noble Gases Group 18 elements; UNREACTIVE NONMETALS on the PT; They have a full energy level with 8 valence electrons
Actinides The bottom horizontal line of elements at the bottom of the periodic table that is separated from the rest, mostly synthetic (man-made)
Lanthanides The top horizontal line of elements at the bottom of the periodic table that is separated from the rest, often are radioactive, including the elements Uranium and Plutonium, used for nuclear energy
Group/Family one of 18 columns of elements on the PT; elements in the same group will react very similarly
Period one of 7 rows of elements on the PT; elements in the same period will have the same number of energy levels
Valence Electron electrons in the outermost energy level that form bonds with other elements, remember the magic number is 8
Precipitate the chemical reaction/formation of a solid when you mix a solution of two liquids
Open System matter or energy can enter from or escape to the surroundings from the chemical reaction ex. campfire
Closed System matter or energy is not allowed to enter or leave the chemical reaction ex chemical reaction in a ziplock bag
Catalyst a chemical or substance that speeds up a chemical reaction ex. digestive enzymes link different molecules together so they can be broken down easier
Inhibitor a chemical or substance that slows down a chemical reaction, ex. Water (water's high specific heat absorbs the energy instead of going into the chemical reaction)
Chemical equation a way to represent a chemical reaction using element symbols and coefficients
Chemical formula A set of chemical symbols and subscripts showing how many of each element present in a substance
Coefficient changeable large numbers in front of each substance in a chemical equation; tells how many molecules of each substance the equation; Change the number to balance the equation
Subscript permanent small numbers that are written below the line; tells how many atoms of a given type are in a compound
The arrow in an equation Called a "Yield sign" means to produce or make in a chemical reaction
Law of Conservation of Mass matter cannot be created or destroyed, just rearranged to form new substances
Product the chemicals that are made in a chemical equation
Reactants the starting materials for a chemical reaction

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
