TermDefinition
atmosphere Mixture of gases which includes 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and 1% other gases,
troposphere Lowest part of the atmosphere which contains most of the moisture; where weather occurs.
fossil fuels Coal, oil and natural gas that are burned to generate electricity.
stratified Term used to describe how the atmosphere is divided into layers.
ozone Radiation from the Sun is absorbed by this.
photosyntesis When green plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen.
greenhouse gases Gases like carbon dioxide, methane and water vapor which trap heat close to the surface.
chloroflurocarbons Added by human activities which decrease the amount of ozone. (CFCs)
climate Average weather conditions that prevail each season and year.
weather Conditions in the atmosphere of a location for a short period of time.
transpiration Plants release moisture directly to the air.
water cycle Movement of moisture between the atmosphere, lithosphere and hydrosphere.
humidity Gaseous moisture in the air or invisible water vapor.
precipitation Falling ice crystals or water droplets caused by gravity pulling them down.
air pressure Weight of air pushing down.
high pressure Weather conditions which are cool, dry, clear and calm.
low pressure Weather conditions which are warm, moist, cloudy and unstable.
anemometer Device used to measure wind speed.
barometer Device used to measure air pressure.
winds Horizontal air movements.
air mass Body of air which acquires temperature and humidity from the region it forms in.
prevailing winds Upper air currents which determine movement of air masses.
fronts Boundaries between air masses.
hazardous weather Humans can prepare and protect themselves from this if warnings are given.
stratosphere second part of atmosphere where clouds rarely occur and contains ozone layer.
