| strong force | the attractive force that holds the nucleus of the atom together |

| atomic mass | the number of protons plus the number of neutrons in one atom |
| element | substance that is made of only one particular type of atom and cannot be broken down into simpler substances |
| electron energy level | a location of electrons surrounding the nucleus in the atom |
| period | a horizontal row of the periodic table |
| (group) chemical family | a group of elements that have similar properties |
| valence electrons | an electron in the outermost energy level of an atom |
| metal | an element that is typically shiny and hard and a good conductor of heat and electricity |
| nonmetal | an element that is typically dull and a poor conductor of heat and electricity |
