periodic table a chart that arranges elements having similar properties into the same groups
electrostatic charge a property of matter that can be either positive, negative, or neutral
strong force the attractive force that holds the nucleus of the atom together
atomic number the number of protons in one atom of a particular element
atomic mass the number of protons plus the number of neutrons in one atom
element substance that is made of only one particular type of atom and cannot be broken down into simpler substances
electron energy level a location of electrons surrounding the nucleus in the atom
period a horizontal row of the periodic table
(group) chemical family a group of elements that have similar properties
valence electrons an electron in the outermost energy level of an atom
metal an element that is typically shiny and hard and a good conductor of heat and electricity
nonmetal an element that is typically dull and a poor conductor of heat and electricity
