constants things that stay the same on purpose in an experiment
independent variable the variable you change on purpose (IV); "I" change it
dependent variable the variable in an experiment that can be measured or observed to see how it responds to a change made to the independent variable (DV)
qualitative data using descriptions to show how things are
quantitative data using numbers to express measurements
hypothesis an explanation based on scientific reasoning that can be tested to see if it is correct; "If _____, then _____."
classification key tool used to help identify objects and organisms based on a series of questions about their characteristics
kinetic energy motion energy, an object that is in motion
potential energy stored energy, an object that is not in motion
current electricity continuous flow of electrons
circuit the path of an electric current
open circuit does not allow electricity to flow
closed circuit allows electricity to flow
conductors an object that allows electricity to pass through. Example: metal
insulators an object that DOES NOT allow electricity to pass. Examples: rubber, plastic, wood
parallel circuit has more than one pathway, if one light goes out, the other circuit light stay on
series circuit has only one path, if one light goes out, they all go out
electromagnet non-permanent magnet created by wrapping a wire around certain iron
magnetic poles the stronger point of a magnet, like charges repel, opposite charges attract
