| Homeostasis | to maintain a balanced or constant internal state; when the external conditions change |
| musculoskeletal system | the system of bones and skeletal muscles that support and protect the body and permit movement |
| circulatory system | the organs and tissues involved in circulating blood and lymph through the body |
| respiratory system | A system of organs, functioning in the process of gas exchange between the body and the environment, consisting especially of the nose, nasal passages, nasopharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs. |
| digestive system | Breaks down food into absorbable units that enter the blood for distribution to body cells. |
| excretory system | the system that removes waste from your body and controls water balance |
| nervous system | the network of nerve cells and fibers that transmits nerve impulses between parts of the body |
| reproductive system | Reproduce offspring- produce male sex cells (sperm) and female sex cells (oocytes) |
| immune system | a complex response system that protects the body from bacteria, viruses, and other foreign substances |
| Pathogen | a bacterium, virus, or other microorganism that can cause disease |
| antibody | a substance produced by the body that destroys or inactivates an antigen that has entered the body |
| immunity | the ability of an organism to resist a particular infection or toxin by the action of specific antibodies or sensitized white blood cells |
| vaccine | substance prepared from killed or weakened pathogens and introduced into a body to produce immunity |
| Virus | A tiny, nonliving particle that invades and then reproduces inside a living cell |
| Bacteria | single-celled organisms that lack a nucleus; prokaryotes |
| Fungi | Kingdom composed of heterotrophs; many obtain energy and nutrients from dead organic matter |
| infectious disease | A disease that is caused by a pathogen and that can be spread from one individual to another. |
| noninfectious disease | A disease that cannot spread from one individual to another |
| antibiotic | A chemical that kills bacteria or slows their growth without harming body cells. |
| antiviral drugs | Drugs that act, are effective, or are directed against viruses |
