Fossils
Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Fossil | The preserved remains or traces of animals, plants, and other organisms from the past buried in sedimentary rock layers |
| Sedimentary Rocks | Type of rock formed by layers in a process of cementation and sedimentation; fossils can be found here. |
| Casts | Fossil imprint of an organism where the cavity fills with minerals; may be sand or clay |
| Molds | Fossil imprint of an organism with NO filling of the cavity with minerals |
| Caprolite | Fossilized feces; evidence of the animal's behavior |
| Permineralization or Replacement | The process of the original bones turning into fossils when water carries dissolved minerals into the pores and cavities of bone, wood, or shells. |
| Ammonites | Fossilized shells of cephalopods that look like coiled snakes; sometimes called "snakestones" |
| Stromatolites | Oldest known macro-fossils made of limestone by the growth of algae |
| Relative Age | Finding the age of layers of rock compared to other surrounding rock layers |
| Absolute Age | Numeric age of a layer of rock |
| Geologic Time Scale | The calendar history of life where the fossil record is recorded |
| Fossil Record | History of life documented by fossils that tells us which fossils existed in a time period |
| Paleontologist | Person who studies fossils |
| Fossil Resin | Hardened sap, known as anber, excreted from trees that captures and preserves insects and other invertibrates. |
| Trace Fossil | Footprint, trail, or burrow that is evidence of the animal's behavior |
| Index Fossil | Also called type fossils or key fossls; help paleontologists know the relative age of layers of rock |
| Law of Superposition | The principle that each rock layer is older than the layer above it |
| Burrows | Fossil remains of holes or tunnels; evidence of the animal's behavior |
| Tar & Ice | Traps creatures and preserves them in a frozen state or surrounded by gooey crude oil |
| Petrification | The process where organic material like wood becomes a fossil |
| Carbonization | The process where only the carbon of the organism remains; this looks like a print of the object; also called distillation |
