TermDefinition
Fossil The preserved remains or traces of animals, plants, and other organisms from the past buried in sedimentary rock layers
Sedimentary Rocks Type of rock formed by layers in a process of cementation and sedimentation; fossils can be found here.
Casts Fossil imprint of an organism where the cavity fills with minerals; may be sand or clay
Molds Fossil imprint of an organism with NO filling of the cavity with minerals
Caprolite Fossilized feces; evidence of the animal's behavior
Permineralization or Replacement The process of the original bones turning into fossils when water carries dissolved minerals into the pores and cavities of bone, wood, or shells.
Ammonites Fossilized shells of cephalopods that look like coiled snakes; sometimes called "snakestones"
Stromatolites Oldest known macro-fossils made of limestone by the growth of algae
Relative Age Finding the age of layers of rock compared to other surrounding rock layers
Absolute Age Numeric age of a layer of rock
Geologic Time Scale The calendar history of life where the fossil record is recorded
Fossil Record History of life documented by fossils that tells us which fossils existed in a time period
Paleontologist Person who studies fossils
Fossil Resin Hardened sap, known as anber, excreted from trees that captures and preserves insects and other invertibrates.
Trace Fossil Footprint, trail, or burrow that is evidence of the animal's behavior
Index Fossil Also called type fossils or key fossls; help paleontologists know the relative age of layers of rock
Law of Superposition The principle that each rock layer is older than the layer above it
Burrows Fossil remains of holes or tunnels; evidence of the animal's behavior
Tar & Ice Traps creatures and preserves them in a frozen state or surrounded by gooey crude oil
Petrification The process where organic material like wood becomes a fossil
Carbonization The process where only the carbon of the organism remains; this looks like a print of the object; also called distillation
