meteorology | the branch of science concerned with the processes and phenomena of the atmosphere, especially as a means of forecasting the weather. |
weather | the state of the atmosphere at a place and time as regards heat, dryness, sunshine, wind, rain, etc. |
climate | the weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period. |
why is the Earth's surface heated unevenly? | The land heats faster than water does. |
what is an air mass? | a body of air with horizontally uniform temperature, humidity, and pressure. |
what does the source region have to do with the air mass over it? | uniform temperatures and humidity |
Tropical Air Masses- what are their qualities and where do they form? | warm or even hot, as they form within 25 degrees latitude of the equator. |
Continental Polar Air Masses- what are their qualities and where do they form? | cold, dry, and stable. They move southward, east of Rockies into the Plains, then eastward. |
Continental Tropical Air Masses- what are their qualities and where do they form? | Continental tropical air masses originate in northern Mexico. They are characterized by clear skies and negligible rainfall. |
Maritime Polar Air Masses- what are their qualities and where do they form? | Maritime polar (mP) air masses are cool, moist, and unstable. Some maritime polar air masses originate as continental polar air masses over Asia and move westward over the Pacific, collecting warmth and moisture from the ocean. |
Maritime Tropical Air Masses- what are their qualities and where do they form? | Maritime Tropical (mT) air masses develop over warm tropical waters. They are warm, moist (high dew points), and unstable near the surface, which is ideal for the development of clouds and precipitation. |
Arctic Air Masses- - what are their qualities and where do they form? | These air masses originate over northern Canada and Alaska as a result of radiational cooling. They move southward, east of Rockies into the Plains, then eastward. |
