Environmental concerns to our environment

TermDefinition
Greenhouse effect The warming of planet Earth due to the atmospheric accumulation of carbon dioxide, which absorbs infrared radiation and slows its escape from the irradiated Earth.
Ozone Layer The layer of O3 in the upper atmosphere that protects life on Earth from the harmful ultraviolet rays in sunlight.
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's) gaseous compounds used in refrigerants, cleaning solvents, and aerosol propellants. Major cause of depleting the Ozone layer.
Global warming Warmer temperatures over time are changing weather patterns and disrupting the usual balance of nature
Hog farms Waste containing harmful bacteria like E. coli or salmonella, can wash off into local waterways and cause groundwater contamination and fish kills.
Invasive species Non-native species taking resources from Native species in an environment. (plants, animals, insects, pathogens)
deforestation Clearing forested land which removes habitats, causes excess runoff, problems with groundwater.
eutrophication excessive runoff of fertilizers in a lake or body of water that causes a dense growth of plant life and death of animal life from lack of oxygen. (green scum you see on the top of a pond)
bioaccumulation toxins accumulating in the tissue of the animal of a food chain. One level of a trophic level.
biomagnification toxins moving through a food chain as one organisms is eaten by another the toxins increase.
