8.7 Global Climate

MiStar unit 8.7

TermDefinition
ecological footprint - the impact of a person or community on the environment, expressed as the amount of land required to sustain their use of natural resources.
carbon capture and storage - the removal of carbon from fossil-fuel combustion and storage of the carbon, usually underground
global warming - An increase in the average temperature of the earth's atmosphere (especially a sustained increase that causes climatic changes)
mitigate - make less severe, serious, or painful
biological - relating to biology or living organisms
sudden - occurring or done quickly and unexpectedly or without warning
gradual - a relatively slow rate of change, or a change occurring over a relatively long time period
rate of change - the speed at which a process occurs
net sink - a natural or artificial reservoir that accumulates or stores carbon
Little Ice Age - A century-long period of cool climate that began in the 1590s. Its ill effects on agriculture in northern Europe were notable.
fossil fuels - natural carbon-based fuels (e.g., coal, oil, natural gas) formed over millions of years from the remains of living organisms
greenhouse gas emissions - the output of greenhouse gases by an energy source (such as coal or oil generators), a device (such as a car) or practice (such as ranching or farming)
technologies - physical devices such as electric vs gas-powered cars, electrical power generation, and practices such as methods of agriculture (irrigation, use of fertilizers) or manufacturing (plastics), reforestation programs
system - A group of parts that work together as a whole
behaviors - the way that people live and work, such as choices in transportation, recreation, housing, the amount of technology used, and energy usage
human activities - actions (relevant to impacts on Earth's climate) which include behaviors and uses of technology; this would also include population growth.
solar activity - over time scales changes in the amount of solar radiation can change global climates
volcanic activity - any of the many processes (such as eruptions and lava flows) in which gas, lava, and ash are pushed out on the surface of Earth
atmosphere - a mixture of gases that surrounds a planet or moon.
inputs - additions to a given system
outputs - losses from the system
solar radiation - energy from the sun
mean surface temperature - Average of near surface temperatures and near sea temperatures.
greenhouse effect - warming that results when solar radiation is trapped by the atmosphere
thermal energy - The total energy of motion in the particles of a substance
global climate change - A broad term that refers to changes in the earth's climate mostly as a result of changes in temperature and precipitation.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
