QuestionAnswer
Pre-Darwin, what did scientists think about the age and changes of the Earth? People originally thought that the Earth was only a few thousand years old, and that lands characteristics all were made around the same time.
What did Hutton contribute to understanding about how rocks form and the age of the earth? Hutton showed that the Earth had a longer history than originally thought. He showed how soils were formed by the weathering of racks and how layers of sediment accumulated on the Earth's surfaces. His theory was the birth of the theory of Erosion.
What did Lyell contribute to understanding of how Earth changed in the past? Lyell argued that the formation of Earth's crust took place through countless small changes occurring over vast periods of time, all according to known natural laws.
What did Lamarck propose that describes how organisms change? How traits are affected not just by the organism itself but by the environment it lives in.
What did Malthus predict if Earth's population continued to grow? He predicted that if the human population was not kept in check as it grow larger and larger, that sooner or later there would be insufficient food and living space for everyone.
