TermDefinition
Ecosystem All the living and nonliving things that exist and interact in one place.
Abiotic factors All of the NONLIVING factors that affect an ecosystem, including soil, water, air, and sunlight.
Biotic factors All of the LIVING components of an ecosystem, such as plants and animals.
Producer An organism that makes its own food.
Consumer An organism that eats other living things to get energy.
Decomposer An organism that breaks down the remains of dead plants and animals.
Photosynthesis The process in which plants use carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight to make glucose and release oxygen into the air.
Population All of the organisms of the same kind that live in an ecosystem.
Food Web Two or more food chains that overlap.
Food Chain The path of food energy in an ecosystem as one living thing eats another.
Extinction The permanent disappearance or elimination of a species.
Energy pyramid Model that shows the flow of energy from one feeding level to another.
Herbivore An animal that eats only plants.
Carnivore An animal that eats only other animals.
Omnivore An animal that eats both plants and animals.
