| Ecosystem | All the living and nonliving things that exist and interact in one place. |
| Abiotic factors | All of the NONLIVING factors that affect an ecosystem, including soil, water, air, and sunlight. |
| Biotic factors | All of the LIVING components of an ecosystem, such as plants and animals. |
| Producer | An organism that makes its own food. |
| Consumer | An organism that eats other living things to get energy. |
| Decomposer | An organism that breaks down the remains of dead plants and animals. |
| Photosynthesis | The process in which plants use carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight to make glucose and release oxygen into the air. |
| Population | All of the organisms of the same kind that live in an ecosystem. |
| Food Web | Two or more food chains that overlap. |
| Food Chain | The path of food energy in an ecosystem as one living thing eats another. |
| Extinction | The permanent disappearance or elimination of a species. |
| Energy pyramid | Model that shows the flow of energy from one feeding level to another. |
| Herbivore | An animal that eats only plants. |
| Carnivore | An animal that eats only other animals. |
| Omnivore | An animal that eats both plants and animals. |
