|---|---|
| metamorphism | Rocks have changed through high temperature and pressure. |
| solid state alterations | minerals in a rock change into new minerals that are stable under the new temperature and pressure conditions |
| foliated rocks | High pressure during metamorphism causes minerals with a flat or needle like crystals to form with their long axes perpendicular to the pressure. |
| non-foliated rocks | metamorphic rocks that are composed mainly of minerals that form with blocky crystal shapes |
| regional metamorphism | when high temperature and pressure affect large regions of earth's crust |
| contact metamorphism | when molten material, such as that in an igneous intrusion, comes in contact with solid rock |
| hydrothermal metamorphism | when very hot water reacts with rock and alter its chemical and mineral composition |
| rock cycle | the continuous changing and remaking of rocks |
