Metamorphic Rocks
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Metamorphism | A rock changes form while remaining solid. |
| Solid state alterations | The minerals in a rock change into new minerals that are stable under the new temperature and pressure conditions. |
| Foliated rocks | Layers and bands of minerals characterize this type of metamorphic rock. |
| Non-foliated rocks | These metamorphic rocks are composed mainly of minerals that form with block crystal shapes. |
| Regional metamorphism | When high temperature and pressure affect large regions of Earth's crust, they produce large belts of this type of metamorphism. |
| Contact metamorphism | When molten material, such as that in an igneous intrusion, comes in contact with solid rock, a local effect. |
| Hydrothermal metamorphism | When very hot water reacts with rock and alters its chemical and mineral composition, and this type of metamorphism occurs. |
| Rock cycle | The continuous changing and remaking of rocks. |
