rock cycle a concept used to explain how the three basic rock types are related and how Earth processes, over geologic time, change a rock from one type into another.
hydrothermal metamorphism Changes that occur in rocks near the surface where there is intense activity of hot water
contact metamorphism metamorphism due to contact with or proximity to an igneous intrusion.
regional metamorphism metamorphism affecting rocks over an extensive area as a result of the large-scale action of heat and pressure.
non-foliated rocks do not have a layered or banded appearance.
foliated rocks a special type of metamorphic rock that has distinct, repetitive layers.
solid state alterations preexisting rocks (undergo slow solid-state changes in texture, mineralogy)
metamorphism alteration of the composition or structure of a rock by heat, pressure, or other natural agency.
