| What is Grief? | psychologic, biologic, and behavioral response to loss |
| What is Mourning? | processing and resolution of grief; varies widely. |
| What is Breavement? | response to having lost another through death |
| What is actual loss? | identified and acknowledged by others |
| What is anticipatory loss? | knowing a loss is coming |
| What is perceived loss? | felt but not acknowledged or verified by others |
| What is cumulative loss? | several losses within a short period |
| What is developmental/ maturational loss? | Expected losses related growth and development |
| What is a situational loss? | unexpected loss, unusual circumstances. |
| What is anticipatory grief? | experienced before an event. |
| What is disenfranchised grief? | individuals cannot acknowledge loss to others. Socially or culturally unacceptable. |
| What is complicated grief? | debilitating grief lasting longer than 6 months. |
| What are the stages of grief? | -Denial -Anger -Bargaining -Depression -Acceptance |
| What is miscarriage? | during first 20 weeks of gestation |
| What is a stillborn? | loss of a baby after 20 weeks |
| Who has an increased risk for suicide? | older adults |
| What are antidepressants? | used to treat moderate to severe depression related to grief and loss. |

| What is hospice care? | end of life care and support for the family when cure/treatment is no longer the goal |
| What is palliative care? | support of pt and family while continuing treatment, pain relief. Do not have to be dying to receive palliative care. |
