Weather Patterns 2

QuestionAnswer
water cycle - the cycle of processes by which water circulates between the earth's oceans, atmosphere, and land, involving precipitation as rain and snow, drainage in streams and rivers, return to the atmosphere by evaporation and transpiration and then condensation to
Precipitation - the falling to earth of any form of water (rain or snow or hail or sleet or mist)
Evaporation - The process by which molecules at the surface of a liquid absorb enough energy to change to a gas (water vapor).
transpiration - Evaporation of water from the leaves of a plant and enters the atmosphere as water vapor
run-off - rainfall that is not absorbed by soil and travels to the ocean
water vapor - water in the form of a gas, in the atmosphere
sun - source of energy to drive evaporation in the water cycle
gravity - A force that pulls objects toward each other, pulls water toward and along the surface of the Earth
clouds - a visible mass of condensed water vapor floating in the atmosphere
cirrus - Wispy, feathery clouds made of ice crystals that form at high levels.
cumulus - Fluffy, white clouds, usually with flat bottoms, that look like rounded piles of cotton.
stratus - Clouds that form in flat layers and often cover much of the sky.
Cumulonimbus - A type of cumulus cloud that is TALL and gray at the bottom half, and associated with thunderstorms.
cirro- - high clouds
alto- - mid-level clouds
weather - The state of the atmosphere at a given (specific) time and place.
temperature - how hot or cold something is determined by the movement of molecules (faster they move the higher the temperature)
air mass - large body of air with the same temperature and humidity
thermometer - measures temperature
cumulonimbus - a tall towering cloud type which usually brings thunderstorms
cloud - formed as warm air is forced upward, expands, cools, and the water vapor in the air condenses around tiny solid particles in the air (there are many types)
Condensation - water vapor (gas) in the atmosphere cools to the dew point and changes state to a liquid on tiny particles (forming a cloud)
high to low - wind moves from an area of _______pressure to _______low pressure
front - boundary between air masses
cold front - Cold air advances toward warm air and pushes it up and out of the way, often causes thunderstorms and cooler temperatures
warm front - A front where warm air moves over cold air, brings rainy weather, leads to warmer temperatures
High - Pressure area in which a cold air mass is sinking, winds blow away from this pressure area, and generally means fair weather
Low - Pressure area in which a warm air mass is rising, winds blow toward this pressure area, and generally brings windy, cloudy, or rainy weather
stationary front - a front where neither cold or warm air is advancing and can bring long periods or precipitation
Barometer - An instrument that measures atmospheric (air) pressure

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
