TermDefinition
Eclipse When an object in space passes directly between two other objects or between the object and the viewer.
Solar Eclipse When the moon passes directly between the Sun and Earth
Lunar Eclipse Occurs when the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon.
New Moon occurs when the moon is positioned between the Sun and Earth.
Lunar cycle the time it takes the moon to revolve around the Earth (29.5 days)
Waxing The moon becomes increasingly more visible from Earth
Waning The moon becomes decreasingly less visible from Earth
Crescent Moon occurs when the sun, Earth and the moon create an acute angle causing less than half of the moon to be visible
Gibbous Moon occurs when the Earth is positioned between the moon and the Sun forming an obtuse angle and causing more than half the moon to be visible.
Earth's Axis Is tilted at 23.5 degrees and remains pointed in the same direction as Earth revolves around the sun.
Revolution One orbit around the sun.
Rotation One complete spin around an axis
Equinox When both hemispheres receive the same amount of sunlight, the length of day and night are equal.
Solstice When one hemisphere is pointed at the sun and receives more direct sunlight than the other.
Summer occurs in the hemisphere that is tilted toward the sun.
Winter occurs in the hemisphere that is tilted away from the sun
