AAERT Common Words and Phrases Part 6

Pro hac vice For this occasion
Pro rata In proportion - according to calculation, a proportional division.
Pro se For oneself - a party representing themselves rather than being represented by counsel
Pro tem, pro tempore For the time being - a temporary substitute or provisional act.
Qua Considered as - signifying a person acting as or for another person, entity, or title
Quaere Question, open to doubt, a rule or decision considered questionable.
Quantum-S Quanta- P Amount, amounts
Quantum meruit What one has earned - a reasonable sum of money to be paid for services rendered or work done when the amount due is not stipulated in a legally enforceable contract.
Quasi Almost - as if, indicating resemblance
Quid pro quo Something for something - mutual consideration
Q.E.D. Abbreviated from "quod erat demonstrandum," "thus it has been demonstrated" - term applied to anything obviously true.
qv Abbreviated from "quod vide," "which see" - a reference or a citation to another item of source material.
Re (s) Res (p) Thing - concerning something in the matter of, often with only one party.
Remittitur To send back, to remit - an order reducing a grossly excessive Jury award.
Res gestae Things done - Any facts that are needed to accompany, constitute or explain a transaction that is being questioned.
Res ipsa loquitur The thing speaks for itself
Res judicata A decided thing
Res publica Public thing - a state republic or commonwealth.
Semble It seems, it appears - a word used in printed summaries of court opinions where a point of law was not directly decided, ruling was obscure.
