Animals
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| producers | organisms that get their energy from the sun and make their own food; often start the food chain |
| consumers | organisms that get their energy from other plants and animals (cannot make their own food) |
| decomposers | organisms that use dead or decaying animals |
| niche | the function (or job) that an organism performs in the food web of that community |
| habitat | the place where an organism naturally lives |
| organism | any living thing |
| ecosystem | the ways living things interact with other living and non-living things |
| community | a group of organisms that share an environment |
| population | a group of the same species of animal living in the same place at the same time; example-all of the deer |
| carnivore | eats only meat |
| herbivore | eats only plants |
| omnivore | eats plants and animals |
| predator | an animal that hunts other animals for a food source |
| prey | animals that are hunted by other animals |
