petals found inside sepal - usually brightly colored - attract pollinators
stamen male part of the plant - contains an anther, located at the tip of the stamen
what does the anther produce pollen (male gametophyte)
carpel (pistil) female part of the plant - contains the ovary - produce + shelter female gametophyte & seeds
why is the stigma sticky? to capture pollen
what is on the tip of the style? the stigma
pollination transfer of pollen to female part of the flower
types of pollination: 1. wind - less efficient 2. animal - birds 3. insects - more efficient than wind

in male part - occurs in anthers - four haploid spore cells produced via meiosis
in female part - occurs in the ovule - four haploid cells produced, only one "survives" - the remaining cell undergoes mitosis, producing eight nuclei, called embryos
roots help anchor plants - prevent erosion by holding soil in place - absorb water, transport materials - holds plants upright
stems - support system - transport system of nutrients - protect plant against disease/predators - produce leaves and reproductive organs
leaves - photosynthetic organs - contain pores to allow gas exchange
what are the 3 main tissue systems? dermal tissue, vascular tissue, ground tissue
dermal tissue protective outer covering of a plant
vascular tissue - supports the plant and transports nutrients - xylem, phloem
