What is the difference between a strain and a sprain? A strain is stretching or tearing of a muscle while a sprain is damage to the supporting ligaments of a joint.
How should an open chest wound be treated? Seal the wound with an occlusive dressing to prevent more air from entering the chest cavity. If a patient is having more trouble breathing, lift one corner of the dressing and see if breathing improves. Provide or request rapid transport.
What is flail chest? How should it be treated? Flail chest is when three or more ribs are broken in at least two places, causing the injured portion of the chest wall to bulge on exhalation and fall inward on inhalation. Support ventilation and consider BVM
Describe the process that can lead a sucking chest would to develop into an open pneumothorax. A sucking chest wound is a wound in which the chest wall has been opened, and air is moving between the environment and chest wall, creating a sucking noise.

What is CMS? CMS stands for circulation, movement and sensation.
How is it assessed? Why is it important to determine early on? Circulation is assessed typically with detecting the pulse and/or capillary refill distal to the injury. Movement is assessed by having the individual move the hand or foot. Lastly, sensation is determined by seeing if the patient is able to feel
Why is it important to determine early on? This test gives information about what systems could potentially be suffering damage, and give you an idea of how extensive that damage is.
What are some signs and symptoms of head injuries? Confusion Unusual behavior Unconsciousness Nausea and/or vomiting Blood from an ear
What are some signs and symptoms of head injuries? 2/2 Decreasing levels of consciousness Unequal pupils Paralysis Seizures External head trauma
How do a closed and open injury differ? A closed injury has bleeding, swelling, and possible broken bones within the the body, while an open injury occurs when skin breaks and there is bleeding (and possible protruding bone) outside of the body.
