Chapter 9 ESC

Earth Space & Science

TermDefinition
Oceanography Is the multidisciplinary science that studies all elements of the world ocean using the tools and understanding of geology, chemistry, physics, biology, meteorology, and astronomy.
Salinity the total amount of solid material dissolved in seawater.
Thermocline Rapid change in temperature observed between 980 and 3300 feet.
Isothermal Within increasing depths, ocean temperatures do not alter significantly at higher latitudes.
Density Mass per unit volume.
Pycnocline A layer of water in which the density of the water changes rapidly with depth.
Isopycnal connecting points in the ocean where the water has the same density.
Bathymetry the science of measuring ocean depths and recording the pattern of the ocean floor's topography.
Echo sounder the first devices that utilized sound to measure water.
Multibeam sonar create a seabed picture and acquire water data with a 1-meter accuracy.
Seismic reflection profile method for interpreting changes in seabed sediment and underlying bedrock.
Satellite/Radar Altimeters Send 1000 pulses per second and get a one-inch precision on the distance to the sea surface.
Deep-sea fans formed from turbidities and have the same basic shape as an alluvial fan.
Turbidity current Submarine canyons are filled with thick combinations of sand, mud, and other material that travel at rapid speeds.
