Herpes Zoster(SHINGLES) Is caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox.(herpes varicella)
Herpes Zoster The lesions are located along the nerve fibers of spinal ganglia.
It is believed that the virus responsible for the shingles lies dormant in patients until their resistance to infection has been lowered
The virus then advances to the skin by way of the peripheral nerve
Sometimes the virus may affect a single nerve such as the trigeminal nerve.The erupture of the vesicles is preceded by pain.
The rash generally occurs in the thoracic region.the vesicle erupt in a line along the involved area
The vesicles rupture and form a crust,and a serous fluid in the vesicle may become purulent
The virus can also affect the lumbar,cervicle or cranial areas
The couse of this painful condition is From 7-28 days.The pain is servere
Most patients describe the pain as Burning and knife-like.with extreme tenderness and prurtus in affected area.
Patients c shingles request analgesic meds at frequent intervals during the acute episode
greatest risk of patients who have a low resistance ti infection chemotherapy or taking large doses of prednisone which could be fatal because of low immune.
Diagnostic Test culture that isolates the virus
Medical interventions are directed at controlling the pain and preventing secondary complications.
Analgesics are given for pain;many times the pain requires opiod analgesics Steroids may be given to decrease inflamation and edema
Lotions may be used to relieve pruritus(kenalog,Lidex) and corticosteroids may be used to relieve prurtus and inflamation
Oral and intravenous acyclovir(zovirax) when given early reduces the pain and duration of the virus.
Recovery occurs in 2 to 3 weeks
Impetigo is caused by staphylococcus aureus,streptococci,or a mixed bacterial invasion of the skin
the bacteria invades the skin.the lesions start as macules
