| Herpes Zoster(SHINGLES) | Is caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox.(herpes varicella) |
| Herpes Zoster | The lesions are located along the nerve fibers of spinal ganglia. |
| It is believed that the virus responsible for the shingles lies dormant in patients until | their resistance to infection has been lowered |
| The virus then advances to the skin by way of the | peripheral nerve |
| Sometimes the virus may affect a single nerve such as the | trigeminal nerve. The erupture of the vesicles is preceded by pain. |
| The rash generally occurs in the | thoracic region.the vesicle erupt in a line along the involved area |
| The vesicles rupture and form a crust, and a serous fluid in the vesicle may become | purulent |
| The virus can also affect the | lumbar, cervicle or cranial areas |
| The couse of this painful condition is | From 7-28 days. The pain is servere |
| Most patients describe the pain as | Burning and knife-like.with extreme tenderness and prurtus in affected area. |
| Patients c shingles request analgesic meds at | frequent intervals during the acute episode |
| greatest risk of patients who have a low resistance ti infection | chemotherapy or taking large doses of prednisone which could be fatal because of low immune. |
| Diagnostic Test | culture that isolates the virus |
| Medical interventions are directed at | controlling the pain and preventing secondary complications. |
| Analgesics are given for pain;many times the pain requires opiod analgesics | Steroids may be given to decrease inflamation and edema |
| Lotions may be used to relieve pruritus(kenalog,Lidex) and corticosteroids may be used | to relieve prurtus and inflamation |
| Oral and intravenous acyclovir(zovirax) when given early | reduces the pain and duration of the virus. |
| Recovery occurs in | 2 to 3 weeks |
| Impetigo is caused by | staphylococcus aureus, streptococci,or a mixed bacterial invasion of the skin |
| the bacteria invades the skin.the lesions start as macules |
