Concept 1 - Enzymes
| Chemical Reactions | The breaking or creating of bonds between different substances |
| Activation Energy | the amount of energy needed to make a chemical reaction to start |
| Reactants | substances that are changed during a reaction |
| Products | substances that are made by a chemical reaction |
| Endothermic | absorbs energy |
| Exothermic | releases energy |
| Enzyme | a type of protein that speeds up the biochemical reactions by lowering the activation energy |
| Active site | the part of an enzyme that attracts the substrate to fit it into place |
| Denaturation | when the active site gets deformed and loses its specific shape |
| What is the overall function of enzymes in biochemical reactions? | the enzymes speed up the process of biochemical reactions |
| What are the five factors that affect the rate of chemical reactions. | temperature, pH, substrate concentration, catalysts, competitive inhabitor. |
| What are the parts of a biochemical reaction diagrams? | products, reactants, activation energy |
| How does a lock-and-key model work? | When the enzymes active site attracts the substrate and it locks into the enzyme. |
