Vocabulary from Chapter 4: Ocean Environments

| intertidal zone | the habitat on the edge of the ocean, or the narrow margin between the high tide mark and low tide mark. |
| estuaries | areas where freshwater from rivers mixes with saltwater from the ocean. |
| wetlands | wet, swampy areas that are often flooded with water. |
| coral reef | built-up lime deposits formed by large colonies of ant-sized organisms called corals. |
| kelp forests | large communities of seaweed that float up toward the surface and remain upright underwater. |
| phytoplankton | microscopic floating organisms that float at or near the sunlit surface, and use photosynthesis to make their own food. |
| hydrothermal vents | openings in the Earth's crust where cold water seeps into cracks in the ocean floor and gets heated by hot magma. |
| overfishing | catching fish at a faster rate than they can reproduce |
| by-catch | also called by-kill, is the portion of animals that are caught in a net and then thrown away. |
