Science Topic 6 Test

Nonrenewable Resource A natural resource that cannot be replaced in a useful time frame. Examples are oil, coal, natural gas, and nuclear fission (Fossil Fuels)
Renewable Resource A resource that is either always available or is naturally replaced in a relatively short amount of time
Wind Energy Turbines are used to generate electricity by spinning and activating a generator by using wind power
Solar Energy Photovoltaic cells convert the energy from the sun to electricity using solar panels
Hydroelectric Energy People use dams to restrict the flow of the river by controlling how much water passes by and turbines convert the energy of moving water into electricity
Geothermal Energy This uses the heat inside the Earth to generate electricity
Bioenergy (Biomass) Plant-based materials can be burned to create energy
Passive Solar Lets sunlight pass through glass to heat a room or building - Example: Greenhouse
Active Solar The sunlight is captured by solar cells, which can then power things - Example: Solar panels
Three ways minerals can form Living things (Organic materials), magma/lava, and solutions
Living Things Coral creates a hard outer skeleton which provides protection. Once the coral is dead, the skeleton is left behind and may get buried and broken down into smaller fragments.
Magma/lava When hot magma cools, it hardens into solid rock. The rock is made of crystallized minerals and when lava erupts from the ground, it cools and hardens.
Solutions The elements in the solutions crystallize, forming a mineral.
Why are minerals important to humans? Minerals are important to humans because they are used in the productions of buildings, cars, electronics, and jewelry, sculptures, and other works of art are often made with minerals.
What is groundwater? It's not evenly distributed around Earth and the presence depends on the type of rock layers in Earth's crust
What is surface water? Freshwater found on Earth's land surface and it's not evenly distributed around the world. It depends on atmospheric patterns and temperature
Coal Formed from the remains of plants that died long ago in and around swampy areas.
Oil (Petroleum) Made of the remains of small animals, algae, and other organisms.
Natural Gas Trapped in pockets within layers of deep rock below Earth’s surface. (They use the method of fracking to collect and store natural gas)
How humans use salt water for a better use Humans use the process of desalination to remove salt and minerals from salt water to make it freshwater. Also, factories can use solar energy to convert salt water into fresh water, but both are expensive and require a lot of energy to do so.
The negatives to using resources that we find in the water and the negatives
Human impacts on the distribution of fossil fuels As the human population has grown, fossil fuels have become less abundant (Existing or available in large quantities). Humans burn fossil fuels and we use lots of fossil fuels in everyday life.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
