Skin Medications

SIDE EFFECTS: *Skin irritation, rash *Allergic reactions (especially with "-caines") *Sedation from antihistamines PO or paradoxical agitation in children Antipruritics
CONTRAINDICATIONS: *Open wounds (healing delayed) *Prolonged use *Allergic to “-caines” Antipruritics
PATIENT EDUCATION: *Clean area thoroughly before application *Rub in gently until medication vanishes *Use caution if they have allergies *Avoid contact with eyes or mucous membranes Antipruritics
PATIENT EDUCATION cont'd: *Avoid covering with dressing unless directed by physician *Avoid prolonged use (not longer than one week) *Discontinue if conditions worsens or irritation develops *Trim fingernails to reduce infection from scratching Antipruritics
Treats dermatological disorders associated with allergic reactions; Used both topically and systemically. TOPICAL-psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis Corticosteroids
SIDE EFFECTS: *Epidermal thinning, w/ skin tears & increased infection risk *Cutaneous blood vessel fragility *Ulceration *Latent infections & slow healing activation *Hyperglycemia, glycosuria, & Cushing’s syndrome Corticosteroids
CONTRAINDICATIONS: *Bacterial/Fungal skin infections, and Cutaneous/Systemic viral infections *Open wounds *Immunosuppressed *Chemo patients *Children *Pregnancy or lactation *Acne, rosacea, or perioral dermatitis Corticosteroids
