The Brain

QuestionAnswer
cerebrum the largest part of the brain, consists of 2 hemispheres, each of which are divided into 4 lobes (8 lobes total); large "wrinkly" part on the top and front of the brain
corpus callosum thick band of fibers that connects the left and right hemispheres, and carries information from one hemisphere to the other
pituitary gland endocrine gland that secretes numerous hormones
hypothalamus controls temperature regulation, breathing rate, appetite, motional responses, and secretion of the pituitary gland
thalamus filters and passes on input from the brainstem
pons part of the brain stem, acts as sorting station and control center, directing nerve signals to the correct parts of the brain
medulla oblongata part of the brain stem which controls breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure
spinal cord long, thing bundle of nerve tissue that connects the brain to the peripheral nerves and transmits messages to and from the brain; responsible for simple reflexes
cerebellum located below the cerebrum, in the lower back portion of the brain, connected to the brain stem; responsible for balance and voluntary movements
occipital lobes located in the back of the brain, responsible for visual processing
parietal lobes located in the upper, middle part of the brain; responsible for body awareness, the sense of touch, and discerning different tastes
temporal lobes located in the lower, middle portion of the brain, interprets the sense of hearing
frontal lobes control memory, attention, and decision making; located in the front of the cerebrum, largest of the four lobes
