DefinitionTerm
-transports materials to and from your cells -Made of 3 parts: heart, blood, and blood vessels Cardiovascular System
-body contains 5 Liters (L) -made of cells, cell parts, and plasma (the fluid part of the blood) Blood
-most abundant cells in the body -contain hemoglobin which makes cells red and transport oxygen (O2) -Contains Iron (Fe) and O2 bonds with Fe b/c they are flat there is more surface area to carry more O2 -Made in bone marrow Red Blood Cells
It won't be able to carry enough O2. Cells won't receive enough O2. Reactions in cells won't take place. Glucose won't be broken down fast enough. Leads to fatigue and being tired. The body doesn't get enough Iron (Fe)
-destroy pathogens- bacteria, viruses and other microscopic particles that make you sick -some WBC's engulf pathogens -some WBC's release antibodies which destroy pathogens -some engulf body cells that are dead or damaged -Made in bone marrow White Blood Cells
Lysosomes b/c they are responsible for attacking and destroying foreign particles. Lysosomes contain digestive enzymes What do WBC's contain and why
-only live 5-10 days -clump together when there is a cut so less blood is lost Platelets
chemicals on surface of RBCs Antigens
Chemicals in plasma that bind to antigens not found on their RBC's Antibodies
-has A antigens and B antibodies Type A blood
-has B antigens and A antibodies Type B blood
-has AB antigens and no antibodies Type AB blood
-has no antigens and AB antibodies Type O blood
-hollow tubes that transports blood Blood Vessels
