Science - Vocab 6-1 & 6-2
| Natural Resource | Anything that occurs naturally in the environment that humans use |
| Nonrenewable Resource | A natural resource that cannot be replenished in a useful time frame |
| Renewable Resource | A resource that is either always available or is naturally replaced in a relatively short time |
| Fossil Fuel | Energy-rich substance formed the remains of organisms |
| Nuclear Fission | The splitting of an atom’s nucleus into two nuclei, which releases a great deal of energy |
| Coal | Formed from the remains of plants that died long ago in and around swampy area. It's a nonrenewable resource |
| Oil (Petroleum) | Made of the remains of small animals, algae, and other organisms that lived in marine environments hundreds of million of years ago |
| Natural Gas | Formed from the same processes that produce oil and found in the same locations, natural gas is trapped in pockets within layers of rock deep below Earth’s surface |
| Solar Energy | Solar cells convert sunlight into usable energy and store in batteries future use |
| Wind Energy | Wind turbines power generators in wind energy |
| Geothermal Energy | Uses steam produced by the heat of the Earth to produce energy |
| Advantages of wind power | Wind Energy produces no greenhouse gases (Clean source of energy), t’s mostly environment friendly, It’s a renewable energy source, It is less expensive than coal powder in many parts of the world, It’s the fastest growing energy source in the world |
| Disadvantages of wind power | There is limited technology, there is visual pollution, wind is not always a steady energy source, turbines can be dangerous to birds and bats because they can crash into the blades, wind energy can’t be used for all of your electronic needs |
