The Skeleton
| Term | Definition |

| carpels | the 8 bones in the wrist; they allow the wrist to move and rotate vertically |
| clavicle | collar bone; joined at one end to the scapula and to the sternum at the other end; it protects the heart |
| cranium | the assemblage of bones that encloses the brain, and protects both the face and the brain |
| fibula | the outer and lesser bone of the leg, much smaller than the tibia |
| femur | the largest bone in the body; thigh bone; connects to the hip joint and knee joint |
| humerus | the bone in the upper arm; its ball shaped end connects into the socket of the scapula |
| mandible | jawbone; the only moveable bone in the skull |
| metacarpals | the part of the hand between the wrist and the fingers |
| metatarsals | the middle of the foot; the bones between the ankle and the toes |
| patella | the knee cap; the bone on the front of the knee joint |
| pelvis | the basin shaped cavity of the body consisting of several bones forming the lower part of the abdomen; supports the weight of the upper body and protects internal organs |
| phalanges | the three rows of small bones forming the fingers and toes |
| radius | the exterior bone of the forearm, descending along the ulna from the elbow to the wrist; rotates to allow the hand to pivot at the wrist |
| ribs | one of 24 bones which forms the frame for the thorax; connects from the spine to the sternum; serves to enclose and protect the heart and lungs |
| scapula | the shoulder blade; its socket connects with the ball shaped end of the humerus to provide the arm's ability to move |
| skull | the bone that forms the exterior of the head, protects the face, and encloses the brain |
| sternum | the breast bone; the bone which forms the front of the human chest from the neck to the stomach; protects the heart, lungs, and blood vessels |
| tarsals | the instep; assist in forming an arch in the foot for carrying and transferring weight while walking |
| tibia | the largest bone of the lower leg, connects to the knee joint and ankle joint; shin bone |
| ulna | the longer of the 2 bones in the forearm; descends from the elbow to the wrist; acts as a stabilizer |
| vertebra | 24 units which form a column; each is connected to the next by joints to allow for movement |
| vertebral column | forms the axial skeleton of the body, extending from the skull to the pelvis; also called the spinal column, backbone, or spine |
