Plant Life science review of 3rd and 4th grade standards

TermDefinition
Germinate when the seed begins to grow or sprout
Photosynthesis the process in which plants use sunlight to make their own food
Flower plant part for reproduction
Stem plant part that carries water and nutrients to the leaves, also provides support
Roots plant part that attaches to the ground for support and to absorb water and nutrients
Leaves a flat, blade-like part on the plant that grows off the stem; where photosynthesis and transpiration take place
Dormant an inactive or sleepy state when the plant does not grow, often losing leaves to conserve energy
Egg female sex cell
Petal colorful parts of the flower which attract pollinators
Pistil the female organs of the flower containing the stigma, style, and ovary
Stamen the male reproductive organ of the flower, contains the pollen
Ovary female reproductive organ of the flower
Pollen a fine powdery substance, usually yellow, from the male part of the flower
Seed a reproductive element from flowering or fruit producing plants
Spore a reproductive element from non-flowering plants such as ferns, moss, and fungi (mushrooms and mold)
Pollination When a pollinator (bee, butterfly, mosquito) moves pollen from plant to plant. The pollen is removed from the stamen and sticks to the pistil.
Fertilization The pollen travels down the pistil to the ovary. When the pollen and egg join, the egg develops into a fertilized seed
Seed Dispersal the seed is carried away from the parent plant by the wind, water/rain, or animals that ate the fruit or carried it on their fur
