8.10B Reading Weather Maps and Symbols
Term | Definition |

climate | the state of the atmosphere over a long period of time |
weather | the short-term state of the atmosphere at a given time or place |
high pressure area | cold air sinks because it is denser (clear blue skies) |
low pressure area | warm air rises because it is less dense (cloudy rainy weather) |
humidity | the amount of vapor in the air |
a front | the boundary between to large air masses |
cold front | cold air mass from north or northwest replacing a warm air mass. thunderstorms at border and clear blue skies after front passes. |
warm front | warm air mass from south or southeast replacing a cold air mass. rainy weather at boundary and brings warm humid air. |
stationary front | the boundary between two air masses that aren't moving. cloudy and many rainy days at boundary. |
occluded front | two cold air masses rush towards and force a warm air mass upwards. thunderstorms at boundary with clear blue skies after. |
anemometer | measures wind speed |
barometer | measures air pressure |
wind vane | shows the wind blowing direction |
sling psychrometer | relative humidity of the air |
